An ethereal portrait of New England aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae) in its full bloom stage, created using in-camera and analog techniques only (no photoshop or AI). The photograph captures a fleeting moment in the day when the light creates dramatic vignettes, reminiscent of a portrait studio. Photographed in dappled sunlight using double-exposure techniques, this particular piece is soft and glowing, highlighting shades of purple from violet to lilac against a mix of deep and pastel greens, with depth and detail, creating a delicate asymmetrical balance.
Native to central and eastern North America (including Ontario), New England Aster supports local biodiversity as a vital late-season food source for pollinators, songbirds, and butterflies, and is a host plant for the Pearl Crescent Butterfly, also native to Ontario. Mindful of her impact, Tallie captures her subjects in a way that reflects her personal experience with nature, both visually and emotionally, as part of her meditative practice. Through her photographs, she hopes to reframe native plants in a new light, inspiring the public to implement them in gardening projects, with the goal of increasing local biodiversity, climate resilience, and conservation efforts through grassroots actions.
